Question 1

Tell us a little bit about you.
Where are you from?

I grew up in Rawlins, WY and I am still a Wyoming girl at heart. Since getting married 25 years ago, I’ve lived in five different states and 15 different homes. My husband is a pilot, and we have four daughters (aged 12, 14, 22, 24). I love the mountains, watching sports, reading, and playing games!

Question 2

Why do you do what you do?
What motivates you? Where did your passion come from?

I love lifting others! There is enough that is hard in the world, so my greatest joy is helping those who are struggling find the light, hope and joy – even in the midst of what they may be going through.

My oldest was diagnosed with High-Functioning Autism at 15 years old. Raising her was full of growth opportunities and challenges, and I often found myself feeling like I was failing as a mother. I felt very alone and isolated. Now that I’m on the other side of those difficult years, I want to help other moms who may be experiencing the same things as a mother of a child or children with autism.

Question 3

What did you build in Soul Seed Academy?

I built Espero Autism Foundation, a nonprofit created to provide services to families navigating autism. Right now our main focus is Espero Retreat, which is a free two-night retreat for moms of autistic children to provide them with rest, renewal, and connection.

Question 4

Tell us about your business.
How does it work?

Espero Foundation is a registered 501(c)3. As such, we run on volunteer hours and a shoestring budget with contributions from a few wonderful donors. (We’re working on building both volunteer and sponsor pools so we can grow!) I didn’t want to charge moms to attend because I wanted to make the retreats as accessible as possible. I know it’s hard enough for moms to get away, and I know autism families spend a lot of money on services. Keeping it free makes it so the moms will at least try to come, and once they are at our retreat we pour into them with everything we have!

Question 5

What has been the hardest part of your journey so far?

The fundraising! Our waiting list has over 150 moms on it throughout the nation and it continues to grow quickly. We have huge goals of getting our own cabin and hiring a Retreat Director, so we’ll be able to keep the waiting list down to 3-6 months. We’re still learning how to spread the word about Espero to those who want to donate and be a part of helping our moms!

Question 6

What does healing the world look like to you?

Our belief is that a stronger mom leads to a stronger family, a stronger community, and a stronger world. Everything we do at our retreat is done with the goal of sending moms back to their families feeling more hopeful, more resilient, less alone, and more empowered. We know moms will love their time with us, but we want their families to be glad they sent mom too!
