Rest Like a Boss: Five Tips for Leveling Up Without Burning Out

In his thought-provoking TedTalk, “How Falling Behind Can Get You Ahead,” journalist David Epstein makes the case for delayed specialization – a concept typically put to practice in athletic development to prevent the burnout of a young competitor.

You see; when you delay specialization, you encourage long-term success. Those who specialize later tend to choose paths that fit them better – leading to greater growth, engagement, and satisfaction.

A broader background has also been proven to foster essential skills like innovation and adaptability.

So … what does this have to do with you?

With a new year fast approaching, the urge to put your head down and finally build your empire is strong.

You’re likely preparing to have all hands on your business for the next 365 days.

You think, “If I block everything else out and just give my attention to this – I’ll thrive.”

You could hunker down and hope it all works. Or – you could prioritize habits that say, “I’m flexible. I’m capable. And I’m ready for whatever life throws at me.”

Today, we’re sharing five small, but incredibly helpful tips for making 2026 the year you level up – without burning out.

Tip #1

The Pomodoro Technique

A tried and true method for working through tasks.

If you tend to feel overworked after just an hour of focused work, you may benefit from putting the following to practice …

Finalize your to-do list and begin working for 25 minutes.

Once those 25 minutes are up, allow yourself to take a 5 minute break.

Repeat this sequence four times. At the end of the fourth session, take a well-deserved 30 minute break.

The Pomodoro Technique is a fantastic way to improve focus, boost productivity, and promote accountability!

Tip #2

Schedule Breaks Like Business Appointments

“Even if I wanted to go, my schedule wouldn’t allow it … 6:30, dinner with me – I can’t cancel that again …”

You know who said that? The Grinch!

If a bad banana with a greasy, black peel can prioritize self-care, you can too!

It’s time to start putting your breaks directly on your calendar. This level of commitment reinforces the idea that rest is an essential part of your productivity – not a disruption to it.

Tip #3

Try A Creative Reset Break

Step into a completely different mode by using your break to do something creative. We’ve got a few ideas:

  • Doodle to your heart’s content.
  • Download Duolingo and learn a new language.
  • Practice chords on an instrument.
  • Begin a crochet or knitting project.
  • Pick up a fiction book that encourages your imagination to run wild.

When you shift your focus to a task that is creatively stimulating, it encourages your brain to refresh in a way that inspires new ideas instead of mulling over old ones.

Tip #4

Download Apps that Promote Productivity & Mindfulness

There are a few different apps that are designed to track your time and remind you to pause.

A personal favorite of mine is Focus Friend.

Developed by Hank Green (author, science communicator, YouTuber), Focus Friend assigns you a little bean that works when you work! The longer you’re productive, the more currency you earn to deck out your bean’s apartment.

At the end of each session, Focus Friend encourages you to take a break and recuperate.

There are also apps that remind you to hydrate, check your posture, breathe deeply – you know, all the things we tend to forget when we’re clacking away at the computer for hours on end.

Oh! Since we’re on the topic of virtual automation …
